Ok, Fashionistas. Do you do math like I do? If you see an amazing item that is a unique, well-crafted, luxurious, and a “must have” (and there are many), you do the math: take the price you pay and divide by times you will wear. And, if your math is as good as mine, it usually comes out to less than $1.00 per wear! Hooray! You know what I’m talkin’ about…
But don’t forget to add in your dry cleaning/laundry costs before you divide if the item is high-end (like fine wool or cashmere). Yikes. That boosts my cost per wear to around $2.50/wear. hmm.
No need to fret, my friends. The boutique laundry line, The Laundress, will rescue you on many, if not most of your fine woolens. Patric, owner of Mona Williams in Northeast Minneapolis is the only retailer in MN that carries the full line from The Laundress NYC, and he can give you insider tips and opinions on each product. I decided to try the Wash and Stain Bar ($6./ea), brush ($10./ea) and Wool and Cashmere Shampoo ($19./bottle).
The bar/brush set is a “no-brainer” — affordable and adorable! Also, guess what, it totally works. I love that little brush so much, I’m going back for another so I can have one in the bathroom as well as the laundry room (aka our basement). The soap works very well, but I’m not fond of the scent. By all means, it’s not offensive, it’s just not what I’m attracted to. No worries though – items that need spot removal go into the general wash anyway.
The real test for me was the Wool and Cashmere wash. I had my doubts, but Patric said he washed a suit with it and was more than happy with the results. So, I went for it: I decided to wash my gorgeous Tessa Louise crop ‘n cuff boucle sweater, a J. Crew merino sweater, my coveted Ted Baker cape, and a thrift-store plaid jacket. All wool. All dry-clean recommended. 2 capfuls of the Wool and Cashmere Shampoo (which by the way smells like Cedar, and is divine) on delicate, and voila! Clean! Still skeptical, I dried them flat on towels and waited a day. Like Patric with his suit, I was pleasantly surprised with the results! My cape! My cropped sweater! They looked and smelled beautiful!
While this is not a prescription to avoid the professional cleaners entirely, I promise that The Laundress products will help you cut down your bill, so when you do the math, your answer will be simple: “I’m gettin’ this!”
