A couple of nights ago I caught the last half of “The Way We Were” (1973) on TV. And perhaps it was the mood I was in, but I was so happy to reconnect with this movie that I hadn’t seen or thought of in years. I was completely mesmerized by the young Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand.
Despite all that is outdated in the movie (such as Streisand smoking and drinking up a storm throughout her pregnancy), much of the “look” of the characters is incredibly modern and cool. Barb’s smoky eyes/neutral lip makeup to the J.Crew-like costuming underscored their beach-y California lifestyle that presented itself as chic and casually glamorous.
It was refreshing to see these stars in all their naturalness; that is – sans Botox, implants, or other plastic surgery. While it’s regrettable that Babs sports a really bad short and curly haircut at the end of the movie, who cares? It’s the Plaza Hotel. It’s Hubble and Katie’s chance encounter. It’s about moving on. Don’t mind the hair, just get yourself more tissues!!!
